Accident on Missouri highway injures 5

An accident on Highway 61 in Cape Girardeau County injured five people, according to authorities. The August 3 incident happened near Jackson at approximately 3:15 p.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reportedly filed multiple felony charges against a 39-year-old woman in connection with the accident.

Authorities stated that the 39-year-old woman was driving a vehicle on the highway when she veered off the road, overcorrected and then returned to the roadway only to collide head-on with a van. The 39-year-old driver and two other occupants of her vehicle, a 17-year-old passenger and an 8-year-old passenger, suffered serious injuries in the accident, authorities reported. Emergency personnel transported them to St. Francis Medical Center.

A fourth occupant of that vehicle, a 15-year-old passenger, and the 70-year-old driver of the van both reportedly suffered minor injuries. Emergency personnel transported them to St. Francis Hospital as well. The 39-year-old woman is facing felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and second-degree assault.
